
Standing water on a hardwood floor — every hour it sits, the restorable area shrinks.
A burst supply line, a failed water heater, a slow leak that finally gave way overnight — by the time you notice, the water has already started its work. What happens in the first day determines how much of your home is restored and how much is rebuilt. The steps below are the ones our dispatchers walk callers through while a crew is en route.
Water moves in a predictable order. It runs to the lowest point, wicks up into porous materials — drywall, baseboard, subfloor — and within hours begins to carry whatever it touches into places you cannot see. Mitigation is a race against absorption, not against the flood itself. The faster the material dries, the more of it survives.
None of what follows requires special equipment. It requires acting in the right order, and documenting as you go.
Stop the source — then cut the power
Find the shut-off before you touch anything else. For a fixture, the valve is usually beneath it; for a whole-house event, it's the main, typically where the supply line enters the building or at the street meter. If you can't locate it quickly, that is itself a reason to call — we can talk you to it.
Once the water stops, deal with electricity. If water is anywhere near outlets, panels, or submerged appliances, do not enter the area. Cut power at the breaker only if you can reach it without standing in water; otherwise wait. No square foot of flooring is worth the risk.
When to stop and call
If the water is contaminated — sewage, a backed-up drain, rising groundwater — or if it has reached more than one room, stop here. These are Category 2 and 3 losses, and they need protective equipment and antimicrobial treatment, not a mop.
Document everything before you move it
This is the step people skip, and the one that costs them later. Before you remove a single item, photograph the scene: wide shots of each affected room, then close-ups of standing water, soaked materials, and any visible source. Capture the make and model of a failed appliance. Note the time.
Adjusters reconstruct a loss from evidence, not memory. A clear record of the water at its worst is the difference between a claim that moves and one that stalls.

What you can safely do while you wait
Once the area is safe and documented, a few measures genuinely slow the damage. None of them replace professional drying, but they buy time:
- Lift what you can. Get furniture, rugs, electronics, and anything paper off wet flooring. Slide foil or wood blocks under furniture legs to stop staining.
- Move air, gently. Open windows if the weather is dry, and run fans to keep air moving across wet surfaces — but never across an area that may be contaminated.
- Blot standing water with towels where it's safe to reach. A wet/dry vac helps on hard floors; it does nothing for water already inside the wall.
- Leave the structure alone. Don't pull up flooring or open walls. What looks dry on the surface is often saturated underneath, and premature demolition can void parts of a claim.
